Hello!
This post is about my second semester being a travel industry student. The whole semester is about how to be a professional worker, how to appreciate other culture, and how to make an event. Hope you enjoy it.
There are 3 highlights of my second semester, which are:
1. Etiquette and Protocol Class
This class was a fun and educational at the same time. We had a lot of presentation and more practical activities. We got the chance to present the etiquette and protocol of a certain country. My team chose Korea, because some of us technically know about it and it was easy to find the property. It was one of the most exciting thing in the class. Also, we had a fashion show. We were split into several groups according with the type of occasions. My team got sporty occasions. It was quite hard and easy at the same time. The hardest thing of all is we have to be confidence. Fashion show is not our 'thing', but we have to be confidence with the cloth we wore. But it was fun!
2. Culture and Heritage Field Study
Well, well, well, it was not a travel industry major if we did not go for another trip! This time, we went for Cirebon, West Java. We went there by train. It was my first time riding on a train in Indonesia. It was a pleasant trip any way. In Cirebon, we got to learn about the culture, especially Batik Cirebon, and the heritage left for us, the next generation. On this trip, we got the chance to try making batik. It was a fun workshop. We were given a patterned handkerchief, the we trace out the pattern with the wax for batik. Then, they will dye colors to make it more looks like batik. Here, I learned that making batik need full concentration and determination. Those batik makers are an eager beavers! I was also got to try several traditional food of Cirebon. Most of all, we got to sightseeing the historical buildings in Cirebon such as, Keraton Kasepuhan (royal palace of Sunan Gunung Jati), Agung Cipta Rasa Mosque, and Linggarjati Museum. Not only historical buildings, but we got to see historical site, which is Taman Purbakala Cipari (the location where the artifacts of the ancient time were found). On this trip I got the chance to do some guiding on Linggarjati Museum. We haven't got the class for guiding, but we were asked to try to be a tour guide and tour leader. I was happy to get the chance as being a tour guide. It was a helpful experience for my next highlight story.

3. MICE Class
MICE is not an animal, it is the abbreviation for Meetings, Incentives, Conference, and Exposition/Exhibition. Basically, the class is about how to conduct events. I really like this class. We got 2 events to conduct. First is charity program and the second one is guiding competition. So, we were split into two groups, and I got into the charity program team. We conduct an educational trip for junior high school that unable to provide educational trip for their students. We took the students to Monas (National Monument) and National Museum. At this event, I got the chance to be a tour leader and a designer. Being a tour leader and tour guide was no easy. I have to gave guiding about the sightseeing in Jakarta on the bus. I was so nervous that I forgot the directions, is it my left or my right, and it keep confused me. Thankfully, the participants are junior high school students, so it was not a big problem. About the guiding competition, our class has a trouble with finding the participants of the competition. Thankfully, near the execution day, we got quite some participants. The competition also run smoothly. I was proud to myself and my friends that a second semester student could made a big event like that. :)

The highlights of my second semester really taught me a lot of things. I was happy on my second semester. It was one of my best time during the journey. Many achievement I got this semester were helpful to survive in the next semester.
Beside those highlights, I got Mandarin class this semester. It was one of the big decision I took this year. I was not fond of Mandarin language before, even though I'm Chinese. So, I was having a hard time learning this language. Maybe I was at the bottom of the class for the matter of Mandarin. :( But, I have quite a good time in this class. It was funny that the lecturer was not a Chinese, but he is an American! He likes to treat us Starbucks if we did a perfect tone and pronunciation. Also, I got to know new friends, since I joined the hotel management students' class.
This semester, I learned that travel industry is not only about accommodation and tourism (attractions), but the matter of culture, customs (etiquette & protocols), language, MICE, play a great role.
Keep up reading the next posts, for more exciting journey of a life time!
xoxo,
Jennifer
